Edge Intelligence for Digital Twin-empowered Tactile Internet

Research area and project description:
This PhD project aims to design Edge Intelligence based on transfer learning and continual learning approaches to develop new neural network-based estimation of remote environments for a Digital Twin (specifically for Model-mediated teleoperation - MMT). The key is to design and implement new machine and deep learning methods for achieving high performance with small training data, and to design and implement continual learning methods to improve the models’ performance based on newly collected experience. The outcome is expected to achieve model estimation acceleration for remote environment, and to increase model accuracy and minimize model mismatch, i.e., enhancing stability and transparency, under large latency.

Machine Learning empowered Digital Twins are an exciting research field with many possibilities for innovative research that can shape technology of the future. As such, Model-Augmented Haptic Teleoperation, also known as MMT, is a promising approach for Tactile Internet to address both stability and transparency in teleoperation under communication latency and packet loss. The idea of MMT is that the local device uses a local model, i.e., the digital twin of the remote environment, to approximate the remote environment. Instead of transmitting actual haptic feedback from the remote side to the local side, the haptic feedback can be computed based on the local model without noticeable delay. However, accurate online model parameters estimation is challenging, model mismatch can, for example, cause position tracking error, resulting in dangerous behaviour of remote device.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (TOAST*), consisting of 10 PhD students (3 of which will be hosted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at AU).

*The TOAST consortium comprises 7 leading research institutes across Europe (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France) and 4 industrial stakeholders (Germany, Sweden, France and Italy). TOAST’s mission is to train the next generation of doctoral candidates to tackle the critical challenges of Tactile Internet through interdisciplinary research.

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network Program offers a highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. Salary, holiday payment, pension contributions and the like include all employer and employee's taxes and contributions. Thus, figures are before taxes are paid, and taxes may differ depending on individual circumstances. Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with applicable collective agreement, and salary is depending on seniority. Salary includes a non-pensionable PhD supplement. The allowances mentioned in the EU work programme (living allowance, mobility allowance and, if applicable, family allowance) will be part of the salary.

Qualifications and specific competences:
* Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or within a relevant area.
* Background on machine learning, robotics, and wireless communication system is desired.
* Strong programming skills, e.g., python programming, is desired.
* Experience in haptic technology and haptic application is a plus.
* Excellent English verbal and written skills.
* Be able to work well and communicate expert knowledge in an interdisciplinary team.

EU eligibility requirements in Marie Curie Doctoral Networks:
  • Supported researchers must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.
  • Researchers must be enrolled in a doctoral programme leading to the award of a doctoral degree in at least one EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country, and for Joint Doctorates in at least two.
  • Recruited researchers can be of any nationality and must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
  • Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent by the researcher as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention75 are not taken into account.
  • Secondments are eligible for up to one third of the actual months spent implementing the research training activities under the action.
  • In case of industrial doctorates, doctoral candidates must spend at least 50% of their fellowship duration in the non-academic sector.’
