PhD in diagnostics and management to prevent mortality in sows with special emphasis on liver lobe torsions
Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Animal Science programme. The position is available from 1 January 2024 or later.
Title:
PhD in diagnostics and management to prevent mortality in sows with special emphasis on liver lobe torsions
Research area and project description:
Are you inspired by the opportunity to contribute to enhanced animal welfare in sow herds and up for a challenge? We are seeking a passionate PhD student with a keen interest in pathology to join our endeavour in understanding reasons behind the mortality of more than 16% of sows in Danish herds. Join our dedicated team working on health and welfare in pigs, where you will receive expert guidance from committed supervisors. The Ph.D. position is available from 1st December 2023 or later.
The Ph.D. project is part of a three-year research project, aimed at gaining more knowledge about cause of mortality in sows. A previous study surprisingly revealed that over 40% of mortality in lactating sows resulted from liver lobe torsions. This finding is exceptional, as no other national or international studies have reported similar prevalences, making it crucial to research the underlying reasons for these torsions.
The objectives of this Ph.D. project are twofold: first, to determine the prevalence of liver lobe torsions as a cause of death in Danish sows, and second, to investigate the occurrence of liver lobe torsions in free-farrowing systems and during pregnancy. Additionally, we aim to gain deeper insights into the pathogenesis of the condition and to identify important associated risk factors.
The project's methodology involves pathological examinations, making it essential that you possess a master's degree in veterinary science and an interest in conducting necropsies and, probably, histopathological examinations. Knowledge and interest in pig production would be advantageous, as the project also focuses on management practices and request a strong collaboration with farmers.
We are looking for a candidate who is eager to work in the field of animal welfare and on a subject of great concern for farmers, veterinarians, and the society. The project can be tailored to align with your interests, and we welcome creative ideas that can enhance our understanding of this unexplored area.
As a Ph.D. student, you will be employed in the Section for Management and Modeling. Our overarching goal is to promote animal welfare, contribute to the green transition, and ensure economic viability for a sustainable future. You will obtain experience conducting public advise for authorities and teaching at our new veterinary degree at Campus Viborg
For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.
