Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Agroecology programme. The position is available from 1 February 2024 or later.

Title:
PhD in Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Agroecosystems

Research area and project description:
The agricultural sector is responsible for 23% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Denmark, and the Danish Climate Act mandates net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Especially the reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is paramount to reach this goal. However, N2O can differ substantially in space and time. Understanding this spatiotemporal variation of N2O emissions in agricultural soils can help to understand the source of N2O emissions, and how to reduce the variation of simulated N2O in modelling exercises.

The PhD candidate’s objective is to increase our understanding of spatiotemporal variation of N2O emissions in agricultural soils in Denmark. Field measurement campaigns will be conducted and aligned to an existing project (Landbrugstyrelsen, 33010-NIFA-22-825) with the objective to quantify field-scale N balance on agricultural mineral soils. Gridded N2O measurements will be conducted in conjunction with measurements of explanatory soil chemical and physical parameters for two cropping seasons. The derived datasets will be used to explain spatiotemporal variation of N2O emissions using both, geospatial analysis and process-based modelling approaches. The PhD project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark No. 3105-00086B.

For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.

Qualifications and specific competences:

  • The applicants must have a M.S. degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or closely related fields.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
  • Basic knowledge of either greenhouse gas measurements, or geospatial analysis, or process-based modelling is of advantage.
  • Substantial experimental field work during the cropping season is required.
  • The applicant will have the opportunity to present on conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • The applicant should be enthusiastic about working in an international and interdisciplinary academic environment.

Applications from women and people from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged.
