BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of neuroimmunology as per 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 36 months.

About the research project

Protection of the brain against infections is essential to maintain brain homeostasis. Herpesviruses are neurotropic viruses, and can cause diseases in the CNS, including encephalitis and meningitis. In addition, there is emerging understanding of how herpesvirus infections may promote development of neurodegenerative diseases. Despite this, there is limited knowledge on the mechanisms through which herpesviruses affect disease processes in neurons and glia cells. This project aims to uncover immunological processes involved in host defense against viral CNS infections, decipher how they are manipulated by viruses, and describe how these processes contribute to disease development.

Your job responsibilities

As Postdoc in neuroimmunology your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.
Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.

You will report to Professor Søren Riis Paludan.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas virology, neuroscience, or innate immunology. We are looking for a person with hands-on experience working with stem cells, including culturing, differentiation, and manipulation. Since the central part of the project will center on implementing, using, and developing stem-cell-based brain cell and organoid systems, applicants with previous experience in these areas will be preferred.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Shortlisting will be used.

The Department of Biomedicine and the host laboratory

The Department of Biomedicine employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and offers modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The department prioritizes diversity and a good work environment, and we believe this is a prerequisite for groundbreaking research. The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree program. Moreover, the department prioritizes innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.
The laboratory of Professor Søren Paludan is interested in understanding early immune responses against virus infections with focus on the CNS. For our work we use a broad range of experimental systems ranging from molecular screening tools, state-of-the-art methods for molecular/cellular characterization, animal models, and primary human cell/organoid models. We have a very international environment, with more than half of the lab members being of nationality other than Danish. The working language is English.

The laboratory is part of the Center or Immunology of Viral Infections. Our core values are high ambitions, collaborative and friendly culture, and development of talent.

Recent publications from the lab of relevance for the project:
  1. Reinert LS, et al. Brain immune cells undergo cGAS-STING-dependent apoptosis during herpes simplex virus type 1 infection to limit type I interferon production. 2021. Journal of Clinical Investigation. 131:e136824.
  2. Fruhwürth S et al. TREM2 is downregulated by HSV1 in microglia and involved in antiviral defense in the brain. 2023. Science Advances 9:eadf5808.
