Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Electrical and Computer Engineering programme. The position is available from 1 January 2024 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'How to apply'.

Title
PhD in development of Cu-plated silicon-based solar cells

Research area and project description
Are you interested in solar cells, microfabrication, Cu plating or maybe all and can you contribute to the development of the brand-new project ‘CuSUN – electroplating of copper leads on solar cells'? Then the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) invites you to apply for a 3-year PhD position.

The CuSUN project aims to develop completely new and groundbreaking technology for the solar cell industry.

  • You will be developing different Si samples for high-efficiency solar cells – ready for Cu plating at our collaborators.
  • You will be working with cleanroom fabrication of Si-based devices using a broad range of tools and processes in cleanrooms at AU and DTU.
  • You will be involved in the development of Cu-plated solar cells based on the fabricated devices.
  • These activities will be in close collaboration with the project partners at DTU Electro, IPU and Elplatek.

The CuSUN project is a cross-disciplinary project aiming to develop novel solutions for high-efficiency solar cells, by combining Cu plating with advanced cleanroom processes such as thin film deposition, doping and laser processing.

Who we are
The ‘CuSUN’ project is a collaboration between DTU, IPU, Elplatek and AU; at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) within the ‘Electronics and Photonics’ section led by the PV Devices research group with group leader Rasmus Schmidt Davidsen. The group works with ‘black silicon’ nanostructured solar cells and photovoltaic implants for blind patients.

What we offer
  • Access to state-of-the-art lab facilities such as cleanrooms and solar cell test facilities at AU and DTU.
  • A new and expanding research group within photovoltaics and retinal implants.
  • A supportive, friendly and experienced work environment, which will help you get started quickly and become a member of our team.
  • A work culture where you will be given responsibility for important research tasks and freedom to choose how to solve problems the best way.
  • A chance to become part of a new, groundbreaking research project with international partners focused on photovoltaics.
For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.

Qualifications and specific competences
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in microfabrication, photovoltaics, nanotechnology, or similar.
  • Experience in cleanroom fabrication is required.
  • Experience with fabrication and characterization of solar cells is a clear advantage.
  • Experience with laser processing is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement.
  • We are looking for a highly motivated and self-driven candidate with the ability to work independently.

Place of employment and place of work
The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Finlandsgade 22, 8200 Aarhus N
