Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Agroecology programme. The position is available from 1 February 2024 or later.

Title:
PhD in Optimisation of crop rotations using diverse grasslands

Research area and project description:
Grassland leys have long been an important element of crop rotations, maintaining soil fertility and carbon storage, compared to arable monocropping. Including legumes and herbs decreases external inputs and increases yield stability. Yet, while many benefits of diversified grassland leys within the grassland stage are identified, especially long-term experiments on the effect of management schemes for the benefits of grassland leys in a crop rotation are rare.

Thus, the PhD candidate will use a long-term experiment as research platform, where crop rotations with differences in grassland duration and diversity, as well as nitrogen applications rates have been in place unchanged for almost 20 years, and with detailed information on the site conditions going back further than that.

In this experiment, the PhD candidate will look at the effects of these treatments on harvested biomass yields, plant diversity, root traits and several ecosystem services, such as carbon storage across different soil depths, nitrogen fertilizer replacement value from biological N fixation and weed suppression. The PhD candidate will furthermore be able to develop related research questions based on their own interests.

This PhD opportunity offers a unique chance to benefit from a large existing dataset and combine it with newly gathered data to understand the long-term benefits of management schemes and grassland duration on a range of ecosystem services. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with interdisciplinary teams.

The PhD is funded by the project ‘Designing multispecies grassland leys for optimized soil carbon sequestration and efficient nutrient cycles in crop rotations - GrassRotate’ (Grant No. 34009-22-2041), which is part of the Organic RDD 8 programme coordinated by International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems (ICROFS) and has received grants from the Green Growth and Development programme (GUDP) under the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.
