A 3-year postdoc position is available from December 1st, 2023 or shortly hereafter, at Aarhus University, Department of Geoscience’s HydroGeophysics Group (HGG), within the field of surface nuclear magnetic resonance (SNMR) and transient electromagnetic (TEM) methods. The postdoc will contribute to the development and application of these methods for the characterization of near-surface geological and hydrogeological properties. He/she will be part of a group of scientists, engineers, and software developers who develop methods, instruments, and software to solve hydrogeological problems.
Job assignments
Presently, several research projects are ongoing in HGG (hgg.au.dk) in collaboration with the Dept. of electrical and computer engineering at Aarhus University. In particular, recently developed SNMR instrumentation and modelling infrastructure have enabled the acquisition and interpretation of pulse-train style measurements referred to as steady-state SNMR. HGG also runs several projects where the TEM technology is key using either a towed platform, drone carried platform or new ideas on very shallow focusing systems. The candidate will be expected to work with both the instruments and advanced numerical developments within both SNMR and TEM.
The postdoc will also be expected to lead data acquisition, processing, and inversion of geophysical data collected within HGG projects in general. He/she is required to write scientific papers for international peer reviewed journals and to present results at international conferences and meetings. The postdoc will also co-supervise PhDs, masters and bachelor students. Strong communication and collaboration skills are mandatory.
The tasks undertaken by the postdoctoral fellow include the following:
- Development of processing, modelling and inversion algorithms for steady-state SNMR data.
- Development of processing, modelling and inversion algorithms for TEM data.
- Lead and carry out geophysical survey campaigns internationally.
- Communication of research results
Required qualifications for the position:
- PhD degree in geophysics, engineering, or similar.
- In-depth experience and proven expertise in surface-based geophysical field data acquisition, processing, imaging, inversion within the fields SNMR and TEM methods.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Programming experience, advanced python is mandatory, C++ and cuda are an asset.
- Knowledge of geophysical software including AarhusInv.
- Excellent English skills both oral and in writing.
Place of Employment and Place of Work:

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
