Job description

The National Centre for Register-based Research, Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, is seeking candidates for one or more Senior Researcher position(s) for four years (statistical geneticist, genetic epidemiologist, epidemiologist, and/or candidate with register-based research experience) to be filled in on September 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is financed by various external grants for research projects aiming to understand the risk factors for and consequences of neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, febrile seizures, traumatic brain injury, stroke, dementia, multiple sclerosis, and their interplay with somatic and psychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, and autism. Specific focus fields include neurological conditions throughout the life course e.g., maternal and child disorders, brain development in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, as well as interaction between genetic and environmental factors.

Tasks

The position is mainly focused on research, and tasks include systematic and independent implementation of a range of research projects in cooperation with relevant local, national, and international collaborators. This involves design of genomic and/or register-based studies, analysis of relevant data, as well as preparation, publication, and presentation of results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific articles. The Centre is primarily funded by external grants, so the position will include continuous work to secure external funding. Furthermore, the position will include administrative tasks in connection with obtaining relevant permissions from public authorities as well as guidance of researchers in handling of private data and active participation in grant applications. Supervision of junior researchers is part of the position.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess research qualifications corresponding to those obtained after successful completion of a period of employment as postdoc or researcher, but equivalent academic qualifications may also be accepted.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Relevant PhD degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or health sciences
  • Knowledge of genetic data and Danish research registers, as well as handling of register data used for scientific studies.
  • Extensive experience and publication history in the field
  • Established national and international collaborations within the field of epidemiology, genetics and/or neurology.
  • Experience with pre- and postgraduate teaching, course organization and relevant pedagogical education at the post-graduate level
  • Experience with pre- and postgraduate research supervision
  • Experience with implementation of epidemiological studies and register based research
  • Experience with application procedures in relation to public authorities for implementation of research projects
  • Experienced user of relevant statistical programs, including SAS, R and/or Stata
  • Fluent in English (working language is English)
  • Can work independently and take responsibility for implementation of the complete research process from idea phase to publication and presentation of results
  • Excellent collaboration skills

About us

NCRR – the National Centre for Register-based Research is a section at the Department of
Economics and Business Economics, Aarhus BSS financed mainly by external research funds (www.ncrr.au.dk). The Centre houses an internationally acknowledged group of researchers in psychiatric epidemiology, regularly publishing scientific articles (http://econ.au.dk/the-national-centre-for-register-based-research/publications/). In addition to its own research, the Centre also conducts guidance and counselling related to register-based research projects, validation and data management of register data, as well as development of methods for analysis of register data. The Centre has 59 employees – including 9 statisticians, 4 PhD students and 4 data managers.

iPSYCH:  is a central project in the research at NCRR. iPSYCH studies the environmental and genetic architecture of mental disorders (www.ipsych.au.dk/). iPSYCH is the world’s largest study of its kind and presently includes approx. 130,000 persons.

CIRRAU: The National Centre for Register-based Research also houses CIRRAU (Centre for Integrated Register-Based Research) financed by Aarhus University with the purpose of advancing interdisciplinary register-based research (www.cirrau.au.dk). CIRRAU has the necessary and fundamental data infrastructure available for implementation of register-based research projects ranging from intervention studies of vulnerable children and adolescents, population based genetic studies of mental conditions, to nationwide population-based studies of a long range of exposures, their results and consequences.

When employed as senior researcher, the primary tasks are research (including the obligation of publication/scientific communication) and research-based public sector consultancy. In addition, teaching to some extent. In addition, undertaking research management, student guidance and supervision of assistant professors and researchers, and academic assessment work.

The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State (in Danish).
