The department of Biology at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a full-time senior researcher position in nature-based solutions for sustainable water management.  The position opens on January 1st 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, and is limited to a period of 4 years.  


The position


The person hired must work with research and development of nature-based solutions for water management, in particular innovative plant-based wastewater treatment solutions. The senior researcher will be responsible for the departments contribution to several ongoing EU-funded projects, among others (i) the WATERRUN project which aims to develop an innovative methodology to contribute to the implementation of urban water runoff management plans in cities based on the Water-Sensitive Urban Design concept, (ii) the LIFE GREEN ADAPT project which aims to increase the resilience of EU waste infrastructures against climate change, and (iii) the LIFE INTEXT project which aims to develop innovative solutions based on a combination of INTensive and EXTensive technologies for dealing with wastewater treatment and reuse to tackle water scarcity in small communities. The projects are carried out in collaboration with research institutions and companies from Spain, Germany, Austria, France, Greece, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, Jordan, India and Denmark. Part of the project activities take place in these countries, which is why the person employed must expect significant travel activities.

The appointee will contribute to teaching and supervision at all levels of education (BSc, MSc, PhD). Participation in and development of public outreach and/or in community engagement programs, as well as involvement in departmental and university services is an expected and integral part of all positions at the department.
 

The candidate

We are looking for an internationally competitive biologist or engineer with a PhD in a relevant subject and with experience in plant-based wastewater treatment. The work requires biological knowledge and experience with low-tech plant-based wastewater treatment as well as technical competence for setting up and operating experimental plants and analysing equipment. We expect a proven ability to collaborate with companies, including international project collaboration, as well as a flair for developing and pursuing new project ideas. Hence, the successful candidate is expected to have the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • PhD degree in biology or a related field
  • An outstanding, independent research profile relevant for the work area
  • Proven publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in international research collaboration and networking
  • Experience of and interest in attracting extramural research funding
  • Experience in teaching and supervision
  • Ability to write and speak clear and fluent English
  • Ability to write and speak Spanish is an advantage but not a requirement
     


Working Environment

The place of employment is Aarhus University, Department of Biology, Ole Worms Allé 1, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. The senior researcher will be part of the research group at the Section for Aquatic Biology. The section offers state-of-the-art analytical laboratories supported by a skilled staff of 3 laboratory technicians. Here the candidate will join a collaborative and complementary-skilled team of 3 professors, 6 associate professors and one tenure track assistant professor. Research at the section is supported by substantial external funding.  

The Department of Biology hosts research programs and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The Department currently employs approximately 140 academic and technical staff and 40 PhD students. The Department hosts BSc and MSc study programs in Biology with about 400 students enrolled as well as a PhD program. The Department offers a vibrant and informal research environment with a long-standing tradition for collaboration with international university partners in the absolute elite.  The working language is English, and we welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

Deadline
Applications must be submitted online and received by: 16 October, 2023.



Application procedure


Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range


Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
