One or more permanent positions as associate professor within the field of Freshwater Ecology are available at the Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University. The position(s) seek to strengthen and complement the Departments ongoing activities in freshwater ecology, particularly stream ecology. The position is a rewarding opportunity to be integrated in an excellent existing freshwater group and to influence the future for a strong research group in stream ecology.

This is a permanent position starting the 1 April 2024 or as soon as possible hereafter.
 

Job description

The candidates are expected to:

  • Lead and contribute to strong and competitive research programs at national and international level within the field of stream ecology.
  • Establish collaboration and contribute to already established collaborations with related national and international research environments and at Aarhus University.
  • Participate in research and advisory projects for The Danish Ministry of Environment.
  • Attract external funding from national and international funding bodies.
  • Mentor early career researchers in attracting competitive funding, career development etc.
  • Supervise Bachelor, Masters, and PhD students.



Your profile


We seek internationally competitive researchers with strong and competitive academic track-records in freshwater ecology. Candidates with extensive experience with stream ecology, for instance within fields of biological structure and ecological processes, stress ecology and ecotoxicology, restoration techniques, nutrient dynamics, fate and impact of hazardous substances in streams, are preferred. The candidates must demonstrate strong capabilities in research, dissemination, funding and teaching/advising activities.

The ideal candidates should have:
  • A PhD in Biology or a closely related field.
  • Documented research qualifications corresponding to an associate professor level.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in major scientific journals and to disseminate research activities.
  • International research profile and well-established international network within the field.
  • Proven ability to lead/co-lead research projects.
  • Proven ability to attract external research funding.
  • Proven ability of excellent research-based advisory work and/or teaching, student supervision and talent development
  • A visionary approach for establishing and consolidating a research group within stream ecology.

Personal qualifications required include the ability to work closely with other researchers/groups within the Department as well as with external stakeholders, and the ability to collaborate and build relationships. Teamwork and cross-disciplinary research are key elements for the Institute.

The Department of Ecoscience is engaged in research programs, teaching curricula and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct excellent research within the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, the Arctic environment and ecosystems, biodiversity and conservation biology. The department currently employs approximately 300 academic and technical staff. The department has a unique research environment at international top level.

Place of work and area of employment

The Department of Ecoscience (https://ecos.au.dk/en/) is organized under the Faculty of Technical Sciences and studies life in all respects. We teach, provide consultancy and research in life; right from bacteria to whales over genes to ecosystems and from basic research to applied biology in nature management and biotechnology. The Department has approximately 300 staff members, just over 100 working in Roskilde, and 200 in Aarhus. The applicant will join the Department of Ecoscience in Aarhus Campus.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
