The Department of Theology (see http://cas.au.dk/en/about-the-school/departments/theology/) at Aarhus University invites applications for the full-time permanent position of associate professor in Old Testament Studies.
The position is available from 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
We are seeking a talented and dedicated colleague with a strong track record and an innovative future research plan in Old Testament Studies. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the development of the Department of Theology and its core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.
The successful applicant will play a key role in the ongoing creation of internationally recognised research areas within Old Testament Studies and take active part in the work of the research group in Biblical Studies, contributing to its current profile with new areas of expertise. The successful applicant will also develop collaborative research initiatives with other disciplines and develop projects with external financing.
We emphasise the importance of taking part in the daily life of the Department of Theology, as well as the significance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. The successful applicant is expected to be present in the department on a daily basis.Research
Applicants must possess the academic qualifications and ambitions necessary to conduct high-quality research in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible Studies and cognate areas.
The School of Culture and Society emphasises the significance of international and interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective projects, and the ability to attract external research funding. The Department of Theology has likewise an international profile and strong research networks. Accordingly, we are looking for a candidate with a solid research profile and track record.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the activities of the research programme of the Department of Theology, and to develop and contribute to research initiatives at the School of Culture and Society in terms of new projects with internal and external partners and external funding. In the application, applicants should explicitly present their vision and plans for the development of Biblical Studies at Aarhus University with respect to research and external funding.
The research activities will be evaluated in relation to the actual research time that has been available to applicants. We encourage applicants to specify any periods of leave they have had without research activities (e.g., maternity/paternity, illness, etc.), enabling us to subtract these periods from the span of their academic career when evaluating their productivity.
Teaching
Applicants must be qualified and prepared to teach and supervise at BA, MA and PhD levels. Formal training in university pedagogy is mandatory.
The position involves teaching duties in Old Testament Studies as well as responsibility for the development of interdisciplinary teaching activities. This includes team teaching in the study programmes of Aarhus University at the Department of Theology and beyond. The successful candidate must also be qualified to teach courses in Biblical Hebrew.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a dynamic teaching environment, including the development and application of innovative teaching methods, in dialogue with students and other professors. In the application, applicants should explicitly present their vision and plans for the development of Biblical Studies at Aarhus University with respect to teaching.

Talent development
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to talent development in Old Testament and Biblical Studies and at the Department of Theology in general. This means that the successful applicant will recruit and supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.
Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to engage in public dissemination and knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University. Applicants should also document prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in theology or related fields.
They must be able to document competences corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship (adjunkt in Danish); see https://medarbejdere.au.dk/fileadmin/www.medarbejdere.au.dk/hovedomraader/Arts/Politikker_og_delstrategier/Criteria-for-academic-merit-at-the-Faculty-of-Arts-1may2022__003_.pdf.
Applicants must also be able to document:
- Academic publications at a high international level in Old Testament Studies and related areas of research. A maximum of eight publications must be submitted.
- A research profile, which demonstrates the candidate’s expertise beyond the area of research on which they worked in their PhD dissertation.
- Knowledge of both historical-critical and contextual approaches to the exegesis and theology of the Old Testament.
- Proficiency in languages relevant to Old Testament Studies.
- Knowledge of sources and cultures in the ancient eastern Mediterranean region.
- Knowledge of other fields of theology, humanities and/or social sciences that are relevant to Old Testament Studies.
- Experience of participation in national and international research networks.
- Experience of obtaining external research funding.
- Successful teaching experience in areas of relevance to Old Testament Studies.
- Experience in supervision of students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD).
- Experience of public dissemination and knowledge exchange.
The following skills are considered an advantage:
- Experience of participation in collective research projects.
- Experience of interdisciplinary research collaboration.
- Experience of interdisciplinary teaching and the use of innovative teaching methods.
- Experience of teaching development and talent development.
- Experience of research management and academic leadership.
Language and further information
Applicants must be able to teach and communicate in Danish at university level. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, they will be expected to learn Danish within two years.

The successful applicant will join the Department of Theology at the School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts. The department is one of the largest environments for theological research in Europe and attracts a number of internationally recognised researchers.
