Title:
Empirical assessment of area-based conservation actions
Research area and project description:
The Danish Nature Indicator is a tool for the evaluation of area-based conservation planning. The first generation of the project was launched in 2021 on naturindikator.dk and built on a national-scale mapping of biotic integrity, legal protection, and naturalness of key ecosystem processes. In the next phase (2024-2027), we will develop a project scenario tool based on empirical data from local scale inventories and in close collaboration with landowners aiming to mitigate the biodiversity crisis by well-designed conservation and restoration actions. The local scenario tool should be based on best available scientific knowledge and extend the reliability of the baseline evaluation using the national mapping. The key features in the assessment will remain the naturalness of biotas (biotic integrity), the naturalness of essential biological processes and the effectiveness of protection against threats/destruction. The principle of parsimony plays a central role in the project as the emerging tool will need to be as simple as possible to facilitate its flexible and fast update in the presence of new empirical data or new proposed future scenarios. On top of the quest for simplicity, the tool needs to be based on existing or new tests and validation.
Subproject 1: Developing a simple indicator for the naturalness of vegetation in terms of its structure and species composition.
Subproject 2: Developing a simple indicator for the naturalness of hydrology based on local maps and empirical indicators collected in the field.
Subproject 3: Developing a simple indicator for the naturalness of soil fertility.
Subproject 4: Validating the importance of landowner intent for the protection of on-property conservation value.
Subproject 5: Validating the effect of natural states and processes on biodiversity.
The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the project group, including a PhD-study supervised by Associate Professor Hans Henrik Bruun at University of Copenhagen looking primarily at the validation of the national baseline maps.
We are looking for a candidate with excellent skills in collection and analysis of biodiversity data as well as capacity for collaboration with fellow scientists and private landowners. Also, we are looking for a candidate with a broad biodiversity understanding and a capacity for creative out of the box thinking.
