Title:
Measurements and modelling greenhouse gas emissions from rewetted peatland

Research area and project description:
Soil types with more than 6% organic carbon contributes with 30% of the total greenhouse gas emission (GHG) from Danish agriculture according to the latest national inventory report submitted to the united nations framework convention on climate change. Reducing the high level of harmful GHG emission by rewetting these soil types has top priority for politicians, farmers, and NGOs. However, emission factors currently used to calculate total GHG emission before and after rewetting are associated with great uncertainty.

In the newly funded project RECALL (Total greenhouse gas Reduction potEntial of CArbon rich agricultural LowLand) we will measure the emissions of all three greenhouse gases (CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide) from various types of agricultural peat soils during the process of rewetting. The PhD candidate will work with state-of-the-art automated flux chambers used for frequent measurements of net emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O at plot scale, focusing on the effects of vegetation type and harvest for nutrient removal and improved CO2 capture.

Data with high temporal resolution enables development of new models that can describe and predict the dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the year for different types of peatlands. Better models are necessary for reducing the uncertainty in calculating greenhouse gas emissions from organic agricultural soils at both farm and national scale.
