Title:
PhD position in nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions form field applied manure
Research area and project description:
The PhD candidate will study the effects of three soil types on the emissions of nitrous oxide and ammonia after application of liquid animal manure (slurry) with two application techniques. Overall, the PhD student will undertake the following tasks:
- Plan and execute side-by-side field campaigns in a unique semi-field facility throughout two years.
- Measure ammonia with dynamic flux chambers coupled with high-time resolution online measurements by cavity ring-down spectrometer.
- Measure nitrous oxide with manual chambers.
- Process data from the field campaigns with relevant computational techniques for data treatment and modelling.
- Assess slurry application technologies according to their climate- and environmental impact.
- Collaborate with researchers in the project regarding overall nitrogen losses, soil properties and management practices.
- Publish research results.
The semi-field facility gives the unique opportunity to measure emissions from three soil types in parallel. The semi-field facility is equipped with lysimeters below the soil parcels, which will be used to measure the nitrate leaching from the parcels.
Reducing nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions from agricultural soils is a high national priority. Fertilizing crops with slurry is associated with significant nitrogen losses, including ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions to the atmosphere and nitrate leaching. Soil type variation among farms, regional and temporal variations in rainfall, and different application methods all have potentially large effects on the nitrogen losses.
A single environmental and management factor can affect the different N loss pathways differently, making it necessary to consider all pathways together to avoid ‘pollution swapping’ and find the optimal balance between the different N losses to best protect the environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support agricultural production.
The project is expected to provide strong scientific contributions to achieving a balance between emissions of greenhouse gasses and N-use efficiency for grassland.
