SurfLab at Aarhus University seeks to hire a fulltime postdoc to study the surface chemistry of plastics that have been exposed to marine environments. The goal of the project is to discover new materials to avoid marine biofouling . The samples will be collected in field trips in the Baltic and then analysed using surface spectroscopy.
The starting date is January 1st, 2024 or soon thereafter, and the duration of the employment will be 24 months.
Job description/research project/research area
A postdoc in our team will investigate how marine fouling is affected by different plastic surface chemistries. You will collect plastic and rock samples from Baltic waters in collaboration with local divers and determine the surface chemistry of the samples. We will answer the question why some materials do not overgrow after extended periods of time in the water and in how far the surface chemistry plays a role in the process. The overall goal will be to establish new antifouling coatings.
Besides field trip and diving campaigns to recover samples, you will analyze the samples using the comprehensive surface analysis toolset our lab has access to. The project will combine sum frequency generation spectroscopy, XPS spectroscopy and AFM analysis.
Join a truly interdisciplinary environment and with close collaboration with our partners in the United States, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Germany.
Your profile
Outside of having a strong motivation to work on interfaces and surfaces, experience with diving and marine field work is an advantage.
