BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

Are you interested in optical terahertz spectroscopy and can you contribute to the development of the project “Industrial recycling of post-consumer plastics – inline analysis, documentation and sorting (RePlast)”? Then the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering invites you to apply for a 1-year postdoc position.

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 1–year position from 1st of September, 2023 or as soon possible.

Job description

During the RePlast project an optical terahertz system is developed to work along with a hyperspectral camera to identify different types of plastics to be sorted on a conveyer belt in an industrial facility. Ideally, this will result in a faster process and higher purity of recycled plastic components.

You will be contributing to the implementation a terahertz system to an inline optical detection platform capable of discriminating different types of plastics. This includes both the materials characterization of polymers with different types of additives and fillers, the instrumentation related to the use of a terahertz system in an industrial setting, and the data analysis related to the discrimination of the plastics.

Your profile

The candidate is expected to hold a PhD in Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering or similar and have

  • Experience with optical spectroscopy and ideally terahertz technology.
  • Experience with hardware control using Matlab, Python or similar. Experience with machine learning algorithms and classification is an advantage.
  • Extended experience with experimental work.

Furthermore, applicants are expected to:

  • Make a statement on future research expectations including area of interest.
  • Have strong cooperation and communication skills.
  • Have very good command of the English language, both spoken and written.
  • Be able to work independent on research questions and deal with practical problems related to our laboratory facilities etc.
  • Capable of assisting students in their research projects and contribute to a constructive atmosphere within our research group.

Who we are

You will be a part of the Terahertz Photonics Group located in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Aarhus University. We are specialized within terahertz science and technology including using terahertz systems for materials characterization of polymers, semiconductors, solar cell materials etc. We have a laboratory facility with both custom and commercial terahertz time-domain systems available project. Our group consist of researchers and students at all academic levels with room for studies of both applied and fundamental scientific questions. Within the RePlast project, we work in close collaboration with our project partners in the Danish industry and the Department of Bio- and Chemical Engineering to fulfill the overall goals of the project.

What we offer

The successful candidate a unique opportunity to be a part of a multidisciplinary team working towards solving today’s challenges in plastic recycling, where knowledge can be exchanged within our industrial and academic project partners working with complementary skills and knowledge.

Place of work and area of employment

The place of work is Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aarhus University, Finlandsgade 22, 8200 Aarhus N, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Deadline

Applications must be received no later than May 15, 2023.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.

Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Guidelines for applicants can be found here.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.

Aarhus University’s ambition is to be an attractive and inspiring workplace for all and to foster a culture in which each individual has opportunities to thrive, achieve and develop. We view equality and diversity as assets, and we welcome all applicants.

Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
