BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Biomedicine at the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Research Assistant in the field of vascular biology and obesity starting 1 February 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a 1-year fixed-term (full-time) with the possibility for an extension.

We offer a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings, and in seminars. The Department employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. Our infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. You will work in the brand new ‘Skou Building’ located at the heart of the university campus, as well as at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, located at Aarhus University Hospital Skejby. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

About the research project

As a Research Assistant, you become part of a young and dynamic laboratory headed by Associate Professor Joanna Kalucka (https://biomed.au.dk/kalucka-lab/). By using state-of-the-art technologies (scRNA-seq; proteomics, metabolomics), our group aims to develop new and improved diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tools to detect endothelial cell heterogeneity and dysfunction. The overall goal of the proposed project is to explore one of the targets/pathways previously identified by large-scale-omics analyses of human adipose tissues. The project will be conducted in a multidisciplinary environment at the interface of academia and a clinical environment, where resources and expertise in animal surgery and clinical patient material processing will be available. Excellent experimental methodological skill and dedication are necessary for successfully conducting the project.

The group

The Kalucka group was recently established at the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University, with the goal of exploring basic functions of endothelial cells in health and disease ( https://biomed.au.dk/kalucka-lab/). We combine molecular biology approaches with the available state-of-the-art technical resources at the Department of Biomedicine. We are particularly interested in looking at the intersection of endothelial cell dysfunction and inflammation. Along these lines, the vacant projects will explore interactions of immune and endothelial cells, investigating their roles in the progression of obesity.
The laboratory is equipped with the wide range of expertise and skills required to manipulate and probe the transcriptome (and the mechanisms governing functions and phenotype of the endothelial cells). These resources span human tissues and mouse animal models, single cell sequencing (10x Genomics) RNA-seq, proteomics and metabolomics. You will receive extensive training and support in these areas. Through our excellent local and international collaborators and core facilities, you will have access to additional expertise and tools. The laboratory is well-funded and is located in one of the most dynamic research environments at Aarhus University.

Your job responsibilities

Based on our preliminary results, you will further develop your own project in the area of endothelial cell dysfunction in obesity and cancer, with a particular aim to identify new regulatory nodes in the control of endothelial cell dysfunction and angiocrine signaling. You will collaborate with other members of the laboratory and with collaborators at the institute. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance. The work related to the project will take place at the Department of Biomedicine, and the successful candidate will be integrated into the department.  You will report to Assistant Professor Joanna Kalucka

Your competences

You have academic qualifications, preferably within one or more of the following areas: vascular and adipose tissue biology, immunology, animal mouse models, and a strong interest in metabolism and recent developments in single cell omics technology. Applicants with previous documented experience in data-mining are especially encouraged to apply.
You possess a “can do” attitude with the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work well under pressure. As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. You should have solid analytical thinking, creativity, and a visible publication record. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

We offer a dynamic, ambitious, and productive environment for a young scientist, and a good platform for a future career in frontline research.

Key qualifications:

  • You hold a degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular pharmacology or closely related disciplines
  • You have cell culture experience, including handling of primary and established cell lines.
  • You will be responsible for performing a wide range of research experiments in the area of molecular biology and cellular biology (cell culture, cellular assays, FACS sorting/analysis)
  • You have a proven scientific track-record, a thorough understanding of vascular biology and inflammation, and preferably tumor and/or adipose tissue biology.
  • Your experimental skills probably cover cell-based assays, immunoassays, biochemical and gene expression analyses
Questions about the position
In order to be assessed as qualified for a Research Assistant position, you must meet these academic criteria. If you have any questions about the position, please contact Joanna Kalucka tel.: (+45) 52169817, joanna.kalucka@biomed.au.dk )

Your place of work will be the Department of Biomedicine, Skou building, Høegh-Guldbergsgade 10, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

We will use shortlisting to select the candidates. We expect to conduct interviews in November 2023.
