Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO) at the Department of Biology at Aarhus University is looking for a data scientist for a 5-year full-time position from January 2024. You will become part of the center’s administrative and research support team in close collaboration with Professor and Center Director Jens-Christian Svenning. Responsibilities and Tasks
- Retrieving, processing, and organizing relevant data sources.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of several databases including the PHYLACINE, Treechange and BIEN databases (involving leading to assisting roles).
- Developing procedures and workflows for efficient data analysis and assuring reproducibility of these analyses in collaboration with center researchers and students.
- Contribute to ECONOVO’s scientific work via research support (analyses, coding) to the scientific staff and students. In select cases, this may also involve assisting the work all the way to publication.
- Data management of all center data and analyses.
- Contribute to supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD students – notably in data collection and analysis.
- Contribute to teaching graduate and undergraduate students in GIS, R, and other technical aspects.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with a MSc or PhD (an advantage) in ecology or biology who has experience from research institutions and with a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience with geospatial data analysis and database management. Experience with research support will be an advantage.
We are specifically looking for someone with the specific qualifications:
- Proven capabilities in handling and analyzing geospatial data.
- In-depth knowledge of programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL)
- In-depth knowledge and experience with GIS and other geospatial modelling platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, GEE)
- Experience with Git
- Knowledge of acquiring, downloading, handling, and synthesizing data from various data sources
- Excellent knowledge in statistical analyses and modelling, visualization & communication
- Good collaboration skills across different groups of employees
- Expertise in ecology, biodiversity, plant ecology, megafauna ecology is an advantage
- Experience with supervision and teaching
Expectations:
We expect you to be independent, have abilities to share and transfer knowledge, and can contribute with high-level research support in handling and analysis of large geospatial data. In addition, the position requires that you can navigate and prioritize in an interdisciplinary and intense research environment among many colleagues and students. It is a prerequisite that you are good at communicating in English and Danish.
