The Poulsen lab at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University, is seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral position.

The position is focused on synthesis of complex natural products with anti-tumor and anti-microbial activity. This also includes development of new synthetic methods, e.g. for C-C bond formation.

The position is available from 1/11 2023 or as soon as possible hereafter


Job description/research project/research area


The project aims to develop highly concise synthetic sequences, that furthermore support the generation of structural diversity, related to select polyketide natural products. Compounds prepared as part of the project will undergo extensive biological assessment.    


Your profile


The ideal candidate has a strong background in organic chemistry with a track-record for performing excellent research related to development of new synthetic methods (e.g. catalysis) and complex molecule synthesis. You are self-motivated, creative, have significant capacity for individual problem-solving but also function well in research teams.

Essential skills

  • PhD in organic chemistry/synthesis  
  • Experience with complex molecule (natural product) synthesis
  • Extensive experience with all relevant analytical technologies (NMR, HPLC, LC-MS, IR)
Desirable skills
  • Ability to led small research teams working on a common objective
  • Ability to interact constructively with other team members with different scientific competences, e.g. within cellular biology.



Who we are/ The department


The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University (www.chem.au.dk) is one of the leading European chemistry departments with a broad research programs. It has a permanent staff of ~30 full and associate professors, a support-staff of ~30 people, ~150 PhD-students and postdocs and around 500 students.

The Poulsen lab is an international research group primarily focused on bioactive compounds, with a particular affection for natural products. Work in the group spans complex molecule synthesis, development of new synthetic methodology, chemical biology including bioconjugation and chemical genetics. The place of work is Langelandsgade 140, 8000 Aarhus C, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range


Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
