The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University wishes to strengthen its activities within research-based innovation. We therefore invite applications for a time-limited (5 years) part-time (50%) position as Professor in Biomedical Innovation as per 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree programme. The department employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and they make use of the department's modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The Department of Biomedicine focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry, and numerous researchers from the department have established companies to develop new medicinal treatments based on strong scientific basic research. Your job responsibilities
The professor is expected to consolidate and strengthen the department´s activities in biomedical innovation. You will have joint responsibility for the development of the department, and you will contribute to the implementation of the faculty's overall strategy with a special focus on innovation. Qua your excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, you contribute to the academic development at Aarhus University and to the university’s profile both nationally and internationally.
The Department seeks a professor with:
- expertise in one or more of the scientific fields of the Department
- general knowledge of all the scientific fields of the Department
- strong experience with commercialization of research and technology
- strong experience with protection of intellectual property (IP) rights – both protection of own and others’ IP
- work experience from both academia and industry as well as experience with collaboration between academia and industry.
- experience with supervision and entrepreneurship teaching.
Candidates should have obtained well-documented international recognition within their research field. Employment implies original research and experience at the highest international level.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Experiment-based research and development aimed at biomedical innovation – e.g. in relation to drug development and validation.
- Development of innovation at the department and the alliances between AU and industry, internally at AU and at the department.
- Assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
- Research-based collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
You will report to the Head of Department of Biomedicine.
Your competences
The ideal candidate should have experience with and ability to work in a collaborative public international research environment, have close contact to the life science industry, interact well with scientists, authorities, utilities, and industrial partners. Special efforts are expected in the areas of research and innovation, as well as potential for research related leadership.
Documented experience in the following fields:
- Research management, including handling management tasks in national or international projects, research programmes, etc.
- Entrepreneurship teaching.
- Innovation, including building up patent areas, applying research results in a commercial/industrial context, etc.
You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.

- track record in attracting funding
- visions within the research and innovation area

- track record for commercialisation of research results, including protection of intellectual property
- track record for fostering collaboration with industry

- experience and insight to the Danish life science industry
- patenting, licensing and technology transfers
- visions within the innovation area

Terms of employment
- In making the appointment, emphasis will be placed on a high degree of original production at an internal level and experience from teaching at different levels as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material, hereby documenting that the applicant has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.
- Moreover, there will be an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks.

- The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
- Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
- The yearly base salary for a fulltime professor is DKK 794.821,53 (including a position related supplement, a pre-agreed professor supplement and pension (17.1%)). Additional supplement(s) can be negotiated dependent on experience, special qualifications and performance of special functions. Professors have the authority to negotiate pay on their own behalf.
- Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.
- Travel and moving expenses may be covered according to the employee in question and, to a limited extent, the accompanying family.
