The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 3-year Assistant Professor position. We offer applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on the development of DNA-based diagnostic tools for tuberculosis and other infectious diseases using DNA topoisomerases as a new type of biomarker.

This is a 3–year position from 01 April 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job description
You will be contributing to exploring the utilization of DNA Topoisomerases as biomarkers for tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.
You will participate in the ongoing research on Topoisomerases as biomarkers for human diseases within Associate Professor Birgitta Knudsen's research group, potentially bridging gaps between individual research lines and bringing complementary interests and expertise.
The position will focus on aspects of the development of point-of-care diagnostic tools with high sensitivity and specificity.
You will be involved in the establishment of international collaborative research programs including external members of the academic community and act as a work package leader of a research consortium to be established on diagnosis of tuberculosis.
The position requires commitment to teaching basic courses at the department and advising students at both BSc and MSc levels.
- You will participate in department meetings and assist in creating a collaborative working environment for the research team, facilitating the growth of undergraduate students, Ph.D. students, and postdocs.
Your profile
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Nanobiotechnology, Cell Biology or similar.
The candidate should have at least 3 years of experience as a postdoc in the field of DNA topoisomerase research with a documented publications track record. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in cultivation and handling of tuberculosis causing mycobacteria or models hereof and in analysis and characteristics of mycobacterial topoisomerases. Additionally, the candidate should have an extensive background in utilizing DNA-binding enzymes for developing diagnostic and/or analytic tools.
Experience in purification of DNA interacting enzymes from yeast, bacteria, and mammalian cell model organisms is of importance.
Knowledge of the complexity of various invasive and non-invasive biological samples, such as blood, saliva, urine, biopsies, and of the tools for extracting active enzymes is essential.
Encouragement is given for translational approaches that integrate nanotechnologies and molecular biology. Demonstration of effective collaboration with researchers from diverse backgrounds, including clinical, engineering, and technical fields, is an important skill.
Candidates with experience with applied research is preferred.
The candidate should have the potential or demonstrated ability to lead research projects and research teams and willingness and skills to secure research funds through competitive grant proposals.
- Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English and willingness to learn Danish if this is not the mother tongue is required.
Candidates with teaching experience either at basic courses or supervision at the bachelor and/or master level are preferred.
- A positive attitude, flexibility, and high organization skills are important.

Situated in a newly renovated laboratory complex within the central campus of Aarhus University, The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics comprises a vibrant research and education environment. The department currently has 75 full time scientific staff, 95 PhD students and a yearly uptake of around 120 students housed in the same building ensuring a lively setting.
The department has access to state-of-the-art core facilities, including FACS, Bioimaging, CryoEM and Biophysics cores.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
