The School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of associate professor in art history with a focus on architecture and/or design based in the art history section of the Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology.
The appointment is full time and tenured and begins on 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
We are looking for an applicant with strong research and teaching qualifications in the fields of architecture and/or design. The preferred applicant has a broad and visionary research profile that includes both historical and practise-based approaches to these fields, including urban planning, and investigates the role of space and place, in cultural and social life.
If the applicant only has qualifications in either architecture or design the applicant must also be willing to develop qualifications and research in the other field.
In the degree programmes in art history, theoretical and analytical insight is deepened through practical exercises and projects that are often carried out in collaboration with external partners. We are seeking an applicant with theoretical and practical capacities to work in this field and to qualify the methodological aspects of practice-oriented teaching in architecture and/or design within the department. When teaching and planning courses, the successful applicant will be expected to reach out to and collaborate with external partners. It will be considered an advantage if the applicant also has documented experience of or a theoretical foundation for doing practice-oriented research.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute actively to the academic and collegial activities related to the art history degree programmes and to be physically present daily. The successful applicant must have strong academic competences and must be willing to participate in multidisciplinary teaching and in collaborative research activities.
In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who will enhance the research and teaching profiles of the department nationally and internationally as well as contributing to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.
Research
The section for art history at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile and a robust research network within art history, visual culture and museology.
The successful applicant will be expected to take a role in developing research in the field(s) of architecture and/or design. The successful applicant will be expected to publish original peer-reviewed research internationally as well as making scholarly contributions to developments within the field. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in relation to both the field(s) of architecture and/or design and the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners, and in connection with external research funding.
Teaching and supervision
We are looking for applicants with teaching and supervision experience in the field(s) of architecture and/or design at university level.
The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the department’s teaching and supervision activities and to teach and supervise on the department’s Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programmes. We particularly expect the successful applicant to teach in the BA and MA degree programmes in art history and visual art and visual culture, for example the courses Visual analysis and method, Image and design analysis and Workshop in art history and visual culture. The successful applicant will be expected to apply innovative teaching methods and to contribute to the ongoing development of curricula and the degree programme(s) within the fields of art history, visual art and visual culture. Experience of degree programme and curriculum development at universities or similar institutions will be an advantage.
Given the international focus of the degree programmes, the successful applicant will be expected to teach in English as well as Danish.
Talent development
We are looking for applicants who have experience supervising students at both BA and MA levels. The successful applicant will be expected to supervise students at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. The successful applicant will furthermore be expected to supervise and help develop the careers of early-career researchers as well as to recruit and supervise PhD students and participate in the development and implementation of PhD courses within the field.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange, for instance in terms of research collaboration with private companies, government consultancy, collaboration with civil society, and the public dissemination of knowledge.
The successful applicant will have excellent opportunities to engage in relevant collaborative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or must document equivalent qualifications in a relevant field related to research in architecture and/or design as well as teaching and research experience commensurate with that attained through an assistant professorship. Applicants must be able to document, relevant to the position:
- an internationally oriented research profile as documented by a strong international peer-reviewed research publication record within the research field(s) of architecture and/or design
- experience of participation in international research projects as well as national and international research networks
- experience of knowledge exchange
- teaching and supervision competences and experience at BA and MA level, including curriculum development documented through a teaching portfolio
- completion of a teacher-training programme designed for university teaching or an equivalent qualification
- a broad research profile that includes both a historical approach to the research field of architecture and/or design and reflects the role of space and place in cultural and social life
- experience of or a theoretical foundation for doing practice-oriented research
- time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions
- experience of applying for external research funding
Please note that applications that do not include uploaded publications (maximum eight) as well as a teaching portfolio (or equivalent documentation of teaching experience and qualifications) will not be considered.
