Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Biological and Chemical Engineering programme. The position is available from 1 April 2024 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'how to apply'.

Title:
PhD position in nanomaterials (photo)synthesis, characterization, application in (photo) catalysis / water treatment and recycling.

Research area and project description:
This fully funded PhD project aims to explore and address several challenges related to Green Chemistry. The PhD candidate will explore the photoinduced synthesis, used and recycling of nanomaterials. The model system developed will be hybrid gold-bismuth oxyhalides obtained using benign chemicals and mild processes, e.g. at room or low temperature. Different hybrid materials will be considered and the effect of the amount of gold as well as how the gold is introduced in the bismuth oxyhalide structures will be explored to achieve new and improved properties. The investigation will start with applications in water treatment and catalysis but the concept, strategy and materials developed are relevant for other materials, multiple reactions and areas of research.

The project will be carried under the supervision of Associate Prof Nina Lock, leading the Hybrid Materials Lab research group, at the Biological and Chemical Engineering Department (BCE), Aarhus University (AU), Denmark (DK), and Assistant Prof Jonathan Quinson, leading the Nanomaterials Engineering for Sustainable Technologies (NEST) at BCE, AU, DK.
The candidate will gain a diverse set of hard, soft and transferrable skills for academic and applied research, the candidate will also develop leading expertise in nanomaterial synthesis, characterization and applications in (photo)catalysis and water recycling.
