Title:
PhD Research in Visualisation for Evidence-based Software Engineering
Research area and project description:
The Section for Software Engineering and Computing Systems, at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), invites applicants for a three-year doctoral position within the area of Evidence-based Software Engineering (EBSE). This position is funded by a Danish National Research Foundation Chair grant that aims to significantly expand our understanding within Software Engineering by means of a solution coined as probabilistic meta-synthesis of evidence.
Evidence-based Software Engineering (SE) has been put forward 20 years ago as key to support evidence-based decision making within both Software Engineering research and practice. Since then, hundreds of secondary/tertiary studies have been carried out, within the scope of a wide range of areas within Software Engineering. However, despite such effort, our detailed understanding pertaining to several SE areas has not improved.
The DNRF Chair grant funding this application aims to address such significant problem via the use of NLP and explainable AI to mine the SE research literature and use such resulting evidence as input to develop tailored, and probabilistic, recommendations to improve SE decision-making in the area of Software Effort Estimation (SEE).
Some of the main expected outcomes from this project require some form of visualisation in order to be understood. Therefore, the main goal of this PhD is to investigate the use of a diverse range of visualisation techniques, which can also include immersive realities, and which solutions are most suitable to this project’s different target audiences.
This is a 3-year full-time position, where the successful applicant is expected to carry out research relating to the abovementioned PhD goal, and to publish research results at good conferences and reputable journals in the area of Software Engineering. The successful applicant is also expected to be strongly self-motivated to pursue the PhD studies, and to engage on a continuous flow between carrying out research and publishing its results.
