BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Philosophy & History of Ideas, School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for a two-year, fixed-term postdoctoral position in  philosophy.

The position is full-time (37 hours/week) and begins on 01.01.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Place of employment: Aarhus University, Department of Philosophy & History of Ideas, Jens Chr. Skous vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

Aarhus university is keen for its staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified applicants regardless of their personal background.

The position and research context

We are looking for an innovative scholar with a background in philosophy, preferably with a specialisation in philosophy of medicine, philosophy of psychiatry, philosophy of science, social epistemology, or medical ethics.

The position is part of the project “Epistemic Injustice in Diagnosis” (funded as an AUFF Starting Grant), led by Associate Professor Anke Bueter. The project aims to rethink the diagnostic process in medicine as a collaborative epistemic endeavour involving (teams of) professionals as well as patients, rather than being done primarily by individual clinicians, and as embedded in particular social contexts. Such an understanding as shared epistemic process makes diagnosis amenable to analysis via resources from social epistemology. In particular, the project will examine the contribution of epistemic injustice to avoidable diagnostic errors, such as, e.g., diagnostic delays in particular, marginalized groups of patients. At the same time, this application aims to contribute to the conceptual discussions regarding different forms of pathocentric epistemic injustice from an empirically informed perspective, as well as to debates about how to ameliorate such injustices.

The postdoctoral researcher will be working on a sub-project of their own design in the framework of the project. For example, such a project could concentrate on the role of hermeneutical injustice in mental illness, or reflect the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the diagnostic process regarding its effects on epistemic injustices.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in project activities, such as organizing workshops, presenting at international conferences, and closely collaborate with the project leader.

To a limited extent, and as agreed with the PI, the successful applicant might be able to contribute to team-taught courses at BA and MA level in her or his area of expertise.

Qualifications

Applicants are asked to submit a research proposal [maximum 3 pages] that explains their proposed sub-project and details how it aligns with the aim of the overall research project. The document should provide details on the proposed timeline and the expected scientific output of the research.

 In addition, applicants must submit:

  • a concise statement of motivation for applying for the position [maximum one page]
  • a curriculum vitae
  • a list of publications
  • a maximum of five publications
  • a teaching portfolio.
The successful applicant will be expected to:
  • develop their research within the framework provided by the general framework of the project
  • present their research at national and international meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed, international scientific journals
  • contribute to the organisation of research workshops
  • play a collaborative role in the local research group, and participate in the daily working environment at Aarhus University.
Applicants for this position must hold a PhD degree or equal qualifications in philosophy, medicine, or a related field relevant for the position.

Applicants must document:
  • expertise in at least one of the philosophical areas of relevance to the project
  • an international and relevant research profile
  • fluency in written and spoken English.
Ideally, applicants should also be able to document:
  • experience in interdisciplinary work
  • experience in workshop organisation.
The research activities will be evaluated in relation to the actual research time. We therefore encourage applicants to specify any periods of leave they may have had without research activities (e.g. maternity/paternity leave), so we can subtract these periods from the span of their academic career when evaluating their productivity.

Please upload a maximum of five publications alongside your application.
Only submitted publications will be assessed; a list of publications is not sufficient. As a result, applications without submitted publications will not be assessed.

Professional references or recommendations should not be included. Applicants who are selected for an interview may be asked to provide professional references.

The application must be submitted in English.

The work environment

The Department of Philosophy and the History of Ideas at Aarhus University is the largest of its type in Denmark and – especially because of the productive tension between the systematic and historical perspectives – the research conducted is characterised by an undogmatic and open-minded worldview. The researchers are thus involved in a variety of interdisciplinary projects both within and outside the Faculty of Arts. Many members share an interest in the philosophy of medicine and healthcare and approach it from different angles (see https://cas.au.dk/en/cphs).
