The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Research Assistant in the field of circular RNA research as per 1 March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The start date is flexible, and the position is a fixed-term full-time position for 15 months.

About the research group

The Laboratory for Gene-Regulatory Mechanisms in Cancer (aka the Kristensen Lab) is placed at the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University, and we aim to explore the interplay between genetics, epigenetics and non-coding RNAs in the development and progression of cancer (for more information about the lab please visit: https://biomed.au.dk/kristensen-lab). We mostly explore the functional role- and clinical potential of non-coding RNAs, including the newly described circular RNAs, in brain tumours (including paediatric ependymomas), colon cancer and haematological malignancies. Circular RNAs are extremely stable within our cells and carry out completely different functions relative to their linear host genes. To study these molecules, we use a combination of traditional molecular biology approaches and high-throughput technologies such as RNA-sequencing and NanoString technology (see: Kristensen et al. Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology. 2022 Mar;19(3):188-206.).

To ensure that the group is at the forefront of translational cancer research, we collaborate with leading pathologists, oncologists, and haematologists as well as basic researchers in Denmark and abroad.

Associate Professor Lasse Sommer Kristensen, who recently received a 3-year grant for the project related to the open position, leads the Laboratory for gene-regulatory mechanisms in cancer.

About the research project

Overall, the project is focusing on the potential pathogenic roles of circular RNAs in colon cancer. More specifically, we will be investigating a particular circRNA, named ciRS-7, using a knockout mouse model. This circular RNA is perhaps the best miRNA sponge candidate discovered so far as it contains >60 binding sites for miR-7 and probably acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) in certain tissues. However, the perception that ciRS-7 functions as a ceRNA in cancer cells has been challenged recently and, therefore, more experiments are needed to evaluate and understand its oncogenic functions in cancer.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at Master level (but has not obtained a PhD degree) and need to be certified for animal work (mouse and rat). Preferably you should also have experience within one or more of the following areas: Molecular biology, cancer research, gene-expression, circular RNAs, RNA-protein interactions, in situ visualization of RNA and protein, or cell biology and functional studies (e.g., using RNAi, CRISPR-Cas9 and overexpression vectors in cultured cells or organoids). It will be beneficial if you possess bioinformatics/computational skills and strong scientific writing skills.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.
