BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Research Assistant in the field of multiple myeloma research as per 1 February 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The start date is flexible, and the position is a fixed-term full-time position for 4 months.

The department of Biomedicine prioritises diversity and a good work environment, as this is a prerequisite for groundbreaking research. In a diverse and international research environment, dedicated employees are looking to generate new knowledge within biomedical research areas such as infection and inflammation, membranes, neuroscience and personalised medicine. The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree programme. Academic staff contribute to the teaching. English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The department employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and they make use of the department's modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The Department of Biomedicine focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry, and numerous researchers from the department have established companies to develop new medicinal treatments founded in professional scientific basic research. About the research group

The Laboratory for Gene-Regulatory Mechanisms in Cancer (aka the Kristensen Lab) is placed at the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University, and we aim to explore the interplay between genetics, epigenetics and non-coding RNAs in the development and progression of cancer (for more information about the lab please visit: https://biomed.au.dk/kristensen-lab). We mostly explore the functional role- and clinical potential of non-coding RNAs, including the newly described circular RNAs, in brain tumours (including paediatric ependymomas), colon cancer and haematological malignancies. Circular RNAs are extremely stable within our cells and carry out completely different functions relative to their linear host genes. To study these molecules, we use a combination of traditional molecular biology approaches and high-throughput technologies such as RNA-sequencing and NanoString technology (see: Kristensen et al. Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology. 2022 Mar;19(3):188-206.).

To ensure that the group is at the forefront of translational cancer research, we collaborate with leading pathologists, oncologists, and haematologists as well as basic researchers in Denmark and abroad.

Associate Professor Lasse Sommer Kristensen, who recently received a 3-year grant for the project related to the open position, leads the Laboratory for gene-regulatory mechanisms in cancer.

About the research project

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematological malignancy and is manifested by uncontrolled cellular proliferation in the bone marrow, leading to accumulation of abnormal plasma cells. MM is becoming increasingly more common and more than 30,000 new cases are currently diagnosed annually in the US. Several novel therapies have resulted in an improved life expectancy of MM patients; however, MM remains an incurable and fatal disease as most patients experience relapses due to unknown resistance mechanisms. Upfront treatment selection and risk stratification are still based on clinical and cytogenetics data, despite suboptimal results. Therefore, we urgently need to get a better understanding of the molecular basis of treatment-resistance mechanisms to identify novel biomarkers with prognostic and predictive value for selecting the optimal treatment for the individual patient.

With this project, we will answer key questions related to treatment-resistance mechanisms of contemporary therapies and get a better understanding of the general pathophysiology of MM by profiling the entire transcriptome, including non-coding RNAs, such as circular RNAs (circRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), in a large cohorts of MM patients. Retrospective as well as prospectively collected MM samples will be investigated and new oncogenic drivers of MM will be further investigated using in vitro model systems.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at Master level (but has not obtained a PhD degree) preferably within one or more of the following area: Molecular biology/medicine and ideally you have experience with cancer research, gene-expression, non-coding RNAs or RNA research in general, RNA-protein interactions, in situ visualization of RNA and protein, or cell biology and functional studies (e.g., using RNAi, CRISPR-Cas9 and overexpression vectors in cultured cells or organoids). It will be beneficial if you possess bioinformatics/computational skills and strong scientific writing skills.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

Shotlisting will be used.
