Are you interested in disentangling the molecular and synaptic basis of memory, and can you contribute to the development of a project understanding and manipulating the dynamics of memory permanence over time? Then the Department of Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics invites you to apply for a 2-year (non-tenure track) assistant professor position.
Expected start date and duration of employment
This is a 2–year position from 1st of September 2023.
Job description
You will work with in vivo electrophysiological experiments in rodents, combining optogenetic approaches and aversive conditioning paradigms in a longitudinal way.
The position is focused on developing the optogenetic, behavioural and electrophysiological experiments (including headstage construction and performing implant surgery) necessary to test the effects on memory permanence (in freely moving mice) of different manipulations, acquiring and analysing the behavioural and electrophysiological data.
These activities will be in close collaboration with physiologists, neuroscientists, and behaviorists.
Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in biomedical science, cognitive neuroscience or similar.
Applicants should have a strong background in in vivo electrophysiology in rodents, especially focused on the acquisition and analysis of local field potentials and evoked responses. Previous publications showing the use of these techniques and analyses will be valued.
Applicants must have sufficient background and familiarity with brain physiology, neuroscience and neuron function.
Experience in the field of learning and memory, with special emphasis in circuit and systems neuroscience will be valued.
Applicants must have excellent and demonstrable skills (i.e., through publication record) and experience in stereotaxic surgery, viral infection, and pharmacological manipulations of neural function.
Applicants must have good skills and experience in rodent behavioural testing and analysis of rodent behaviour data.
Candidates should preferably have university teaching experience in neuroscience and neurophysiology. Possession of a Pedagogical Training Programme diploma will be valued.
Since the work environment is very communicative, the person should have the ability to work in a group, mutual understanding of group members and ability to communicate complex information to colleagues from different disciplines. A proven track record of communication excellence will be highly valued, both in scientific and non-scientific contexts.
Applicants must have good skills in English (reading, writing, speaking).
Finally, applicants must be self-motivated and good in problem solving and can work independently.
Who we are
DANDRITE was established in 2013 as the Danish Node of the Nordic EMBL Partnership in Molecular Medicine, which was made possible thanks to a generous grant from Lundbeckfonden and Aarhus Universitet. DANDRITE is hosted by Aarhus University, where DANDRITE is organizationally placed in two departments: the Department of Biomedicine (Faculty of Health) and the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (Faculty of Natural Sciences).
The Nabavi group is focusing on how plasticity at the synaptic and circuit levels in the brain relates to behavioral plasticity (learning and memory formation) and how the newly formed memories are integrated into the existing network (cellular and systems consolidation) using rodents as model organism.
What we offer
The department/centre offers:
a well-developed research infrastructure, laboratories and access to shared equipment
an exciting interdisciplinary environment with many national, international and industrial collaborators
a research climate encouraging lively, open and critical discussion within and across different fields of research
a work environment with close working relationships, networking and social activities
a workplace characterised by professionalism, equality and a healthy work-life balance.
Place of work and area of employment
The place of work is Ole Worms Allé 4, 8000 Aarhus C, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Deadline
Applications must be received no later than Monday July 10 2023 .
Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.
Letter of reference
If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
