The School of Culture and Society at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of associate professor or full professor of cognitive science and/or computational linguistics based at the Department of Linguistics, Cognitive Science, and Semiotics.
The appointment is full time and tenured and begins on 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
The position will be associated with the Department for Linguistics, Cognitive Science, and Semiotics (LICS) at the School of Communication and Culture. LICS offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes within the fields of linguistics and cognitive science and the bachelor supplementary subject Cultural Data Science.
We are looking for applicants who can
- develop the department’s cognitive science and linguistics degree programmes;
- contribute to our research focus on computational linguistics, computational humanities, cognitive science of language and social interaction, and language technologies; and
- recruit and develop research talent in these areas.
In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who will enhance the research and teaching profiles of the department nationally and internationally as well as contributing to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.
Research
The department has a strong international network, and department members play prominent roles in university research centres.
We are seeking applicants who can contribute and develop our research on computational linguistics, computational humanities, cognitive science of language and interaction, and language technology. This research will be conducted within the Language, linguistics and cognition research programme, and in close collaboration with Aarhus University’s Center for Humanities Computing.
The successful applicant will be expected to take a role in developing research in the fields of computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language. The successful applicant will be expected to publish original peer-reviewed research internationally as well as making scholarly contributions to developments within the field(s). The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in relation to both the fields of computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language and to the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners, and in connection with external research funding.
The successful applicant for the position of full professor will also be expected to demonstrate research leadership as well as taking the lead in applying for international research funding and developing international research networks.
Teaching and supervision
We are looking for applicants with teaching and supervision experience in the fields of computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language at university level.
The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the department’s teaching and supervision activities and to teach and supervise on the department’s bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degree programmes, particularly in the BSc and MSc degree programmes in cognitive science, the BA and MA degree programmes in linguistics, and/or the bachelor´s supplementary subject in Cultural Data Science.
Please indicate in your application which courses you could teach. The successful applicant will also be expected to apply innovative teaching methods.
The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the ongoing development of curricula and the degree programme(s) within the fields of computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language, and in this connection experience of degree programme and curriculum development at universities or similar institutions will be an advantage.
The successful applicant for the position of full professor will further be expected to be the driving force in the ongoing development of these degree programmes and in this connection experience of degree programme development at universities or similar institutions will be an advantage.
Given the international focus of the degree programmes, the successful applicant will be expected to teach in English.
Talent development
We are looking for applicants who have experience supervising students at both BA and MA levels. The successful applicant will be expected to supervise students at both bachelor’s and master’s levels. The successful applicant will furthermore be expected to supervise and help develop the careers of early-career researchers as well as to recruit and supervise PhD students and participate in the development and implementation of PhD courses within the field(s).
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange, for instance in terms of research collaboration with private companies, government consultancy, collaboration with civil society, and the public dissemination of knowledge.
The successful applicant will have excellent opportunities to engage in relevant collaborative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.
Qualifications for the position of associate professor
Applicants must have a PhD degree or must document equivalent qualifications in a relevant field related to computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language as well as teaching and research experience commensurate with that attained through an assistant professorship. Applicants must be able to document, relevant to the position:
- an internationally oriented research profile as documented by a strong international peer-reviewed research publication record within computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language
- experience of participation in international research projects as well as national and international research networks
- experience of knowledge exchange
- teaching and supervision competences and experience at BA and MA levels, including curriculum development documented through a teaching portfolio
- completion of a teacher-training programme designed for university teaching or an equivalent qualification.
Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can document
- time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions
- experience of applying for external research funding.
Qualifications for the position of full professor
Applicants must document a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant field related to computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language as well as teaching and research experience commensurate with that attained through an associate professorship.
Applicants must document relevant to the position:
- a record of original peer-reviewed research publications at the highest international level, which has contributed to developments within computational humanities, computational linguistics, and/or computational cognitive science of language
- a record of accomplishment with regard to research management and the attraction of external research funding
- experience of participation in international research collaboration
- participation in both national and international research networks
- extensive, relevant teaching and supervision competences and experience at BA, MA and PhD levels as well as with curriculum development documented through a teaching portfolio or equivalent documentation
- completion of a teacher-training programme designed for university teaching or an equivalent qualification
- extensive competences in and experience of supervision and the career development of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdoc students and assistant professors) and the development of PhD courses
- a significant record of accomplishment with regard to knowledge exchange.
Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can document time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions.
Finally, applicants are asked to provide a research plan for the next three years and state how they see themselves and the department contributing to future research developments within the field(s).
Please note that although the application process can be completed on the Aarhus University system without uploading publications or a teaching portfolio, applications that do not include uploaded publications (maximum eight) and a teaching portfolio (or equivalent documentation of teaching experience and qualifications) will not be considered.
