Title
Develop and implement image-based tools for pollinator monitoring

Research area and project description
The European Pollinator Initiative is taken in response to evidence of declining populations of wild pollinators. Their first objective is to improve knowledge of pollinator decline, its causes and consequences. While the evidence base for these declines is particularly clear for butterflies, there are large geographic and taxonomic gaps in our understanding, particularly for hoverflies, bees and moths. As the European Commission prepares for standardized pollinator monitoring across the continent, efficient monitoring tools need to be developed and applied.

Prototypes of image-based insect monitoring tools are emerging, but further work is needed to bring these tools closer to implementation at scale. While some pollinators can be effectively monitored with traditional trapping, other taxa are best observed while they visit flowers or when nocturnal insects are attracted to light. This project will develop image-analysis tools for both specimens-based and in situ observations of pollinators. Specimen-based work will focus on challenges related to hierarchical classification and anomaly detection, where model predictions can be tested against ground-truth information about species identities. Images from insect cameras will form the basis for solving challenges related to the detection of small objects against complex backgrounds. The project will work with field data collected across multiple EU countries to test analytical tools at large spatial scales for efficient imaging and species identification.

For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.

Qualifications and specific competences
Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree or at least one year of a Master’s degree in biology, computer science or software engineering.

We are looking for a candidate with excellent skills in computer vision and the extraction of ecological information from image data. In particular, proficiency in programming in Python and R is a prerequisite. A strong motivation and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of biologists and engineers is important.

Together with an interdisciplinary and international team, the project intends to pave the way for scalable image-based methods to address fundamental questions in biodiversity and conservation. An important task is therefore to be able to communicate and collaborate with a wide range of collaborators and stakeholders.
