Title
Interlinking processes between and within environmental risk assessment sectors to improve decision-making and knowledge production
Research area and project description
Degrading ecosystem health, habitat loss and biodiversity decline are important concerns in the EU's Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA). ERA has remained relatively static for 30 years, but recently there is an ambition from the EU to moving from a reductionist single-substance approach towards a systems-based approach, increasing ecological realism. In contrast, the recent development reducing the scope of green initiatives, such as the Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR), have environmental consequences.
We would like to understand how and why these contradictory messages appear. Hence, research is needed to illuminate decision processes within the ERA system for regulating plant protection products (PPPs) and the surrounding socio-political systems that influence these.
In this project, we propose to map the current ERA landscape for PPPs (processes and actors) to determine the objectives and the decision-making- and knowledge processes of relevant stakeholder groups at EU, national and regional levels. Through stakeholder co-creation and research activities, the project will investigate perspectives of transitioning to a systems-based approach, helping to determine acceptable options and feasible components for implementation that advance ERA for PPPs.
The project is integral to two research projects, PollinERA and SYBERAC, which include collaborative research activities with other disciplines, research institutions and stakeholder sectors. This project supports these projects through desk research and by taking on a practical role of designing interview guides and workshop formats to be contacted at multiple levels.
Taking a co-development and interdisciplinary approach, the candidate will facilitate stakeholder engagement activities, including ethnographic interviews, workshops and participant-observations, and gain perspectives of the future needs of key stakeholders at the three operational levels: EU, National and Regional.
