PhD opportunities in extending the life of civil engineering structures at Aarhus University

dato

Applicants are invited for 2 PhD fellowships/scholarships at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Civil and Architectural Engineering programme. The positions are available from 01 March 2026 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'how to apply'.

Title
2 PhD Positions in Life Extension of Civil Engineering Structures

Research area and project description
A substantial portion of our civil engineering structures and infrastructure—such as bridges and buildings—are approaching the end of their service life. However, it is commonly acknowledged that, in many cases, their lifetime could be safely extended, provided that the residual load-bearing capacity is accurately quantified.

In response to this challenge, we invite applications for 2 PhD positions aimed at developing the next-generation tools for lifetime extension of civil engineering structures. The key elements of the projects are: i) the development of automated structural health monitoring systems based on robotics, multi-modal data, and AI; ii) the development of cyber-physical sensing systems for training physics-informed machine learning models for loading estimation (e.g., traffic, wind).

The candidates are invited to formulate a 2-page proposal for the preferred sub-topic. The proposal shall describe the contribution to the state of the art and include a simple work plan.

  • Project description (½-4 pages). This document should describe your ideas and research plans for this specific project. If you wish to, you can indicate an URL where further information can be found.
Qualifications and specific competences
Applicants to the PhD positions must have a relevant Master’s degree in civil/mechanical engineering, competencies in computational methods including computational mechanics, uncertainty quantification and machine learning.

Place of employment and place of work:
The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Navitas, Inge Lehmanns Gade 10, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.
