Title:
PhD in Agronomy and weed ecology in perennial grain systems
Research area and project description:
Perennial grain crops are a potentially valuable tool in transitioning to more ecologically based management of agrosystems. This project aims to explore the impacts of replacing annual rye production in Denmark with a new, high-yielding variety of perennial rye. The PhD student will design their study to fit their interests, but possible activities may include the following tasks. The three-year PhD program includes a 3–6-month immersion with international collaborators.
(1) Compare the weed ecology of annual and perennial rye cropping systems with and without cover cropping.
(2) Conduct competition studies comparing responses of annual and perennial rye to different forms of competition.
(3) Create herbicide dose-response curves for several perennial grain species and elucidate low-toxicity options for managing these crops in conventional systems.
(4) Collaborate with stakeholders to map out knowledge gaps and the potential for perennial grains in Denmark.
This PhD position offers an opportunity to collaborate with an exciting group of international, and inter-disciplinary researchers working to develop science around perennial grains.
