Title
PhD position in Environmental effects from spill of CO2 neutral fuels in the marine environment

Research area and project description
Replacing fossil fuels in the shipping industry with CO2-neutral alternatives such as ammonia, methanol, biodiesel or similar alternative fuels has several direct and derived climate benefits. However, the possible environmental risks to the marine environment associated with a large-scale use of alternative fuels in ships are less well-understood. This 3-year PhD position will be part of a 4-year multidisciplinary research project with the overarching aim of completing environmental risk assessments of using different CO2-neutral fuels in ships.

The primary focus on the PhD project is to study the impacts on aquatic organisms, natural degradation mechanisms, and the spread of substances in the marine environment during normal operation and in the event of an accident/spill of CO2-neutral marine fuels. A major part of the PhD project will be to design and complete a range of experimental studies to:

  • Investigate the toxic effects of spills from alternative fuels on selected marine organisms.
  • Determine the effects of alternative fuel spillage in relation to eutrophication, algal blooms, and oxygen depletion in the marine environment.
  • Understand the breakdown and turnover of fuel spills in the marine environment, including the short- and long-term interactions between the sea and the atmosphere.
Results from the experimental work will be used in dispersion modelling of the spread and effects of spills in the marine environment, including determining the size and duration of environmental impacts. The PhD candidate will collaborate closely with both academic and industrial project partners.
