Are you interested in non-target metabolomics and can you contribute to the development of a project on environmental fate of organic compounds from archaeological contexts? Then the Department of Geoscience and the Department of Environmental Science, Aarhus University invites you to apply for a 2-year post doc position.

A post doc position is vacant as a joint position at the Department of Environmental Science and the Department of Geoscience. The successful candidate will be responsible for research on the environmental fate of organic anthropogenic substances that was displaced in prehistoric environments by humans, with a strong focus on their analytical determination.

This is a part of the ongoing project “Fingerprinting displaced molecular substances and environmental health in deep history”. The work revolves around how contemporary environmental methods using novel Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry, HRMS, in combination with advanced computational methods can be used to trace displaced substances, such as spices, medicine, stimulants, or drugs in past environments as examples of key vectors in a ‘deep’ history of human ecology. The successful candidate will focus on laboratory approach to identify specific biomarkers by IC, LC and/or GC-Orbitrap HRMS and generate molecular fingerprints by applying novel untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic platforms with Orbitrap HRMS.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in one or several disciplines including analytical environmental chemistry, metabolomics, chemistry, geosciences, archaeology or biology. Interest in environmental chemistry and experience with advanced analytical methods are essential. The applicants must have a Ph.D. in either environmental chemistry, biology, metabolomics, geoscience/geology, archaeology, or a related field by the time of appointment. Experience with R, MATLAB or Python, and multivariate statistics is an advantage. Good oral and written communication skills, a good team spirit and collaborative skills are mandatory. The candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary international academic environment. The position is funded by a Villum Experiment grant and is co-sponsored by the Danish Centre of Excellence, Urban Network Evolution (Urbnet).


The Departments


The Department of Geoscience currently employs around 110 staff including faculty, externally funded researchers, post-docs, Ph.D. students, and administrative and technical personnel. DG has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines including Climate and Environment, Water, Energy and Natural Resources, and Deep Earth Systems. We have an outstanding research and teaching infrastructure including geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological laboratories, HF-laboratory, a class 100 metal-free clean-laboratory, and TCN dating facilities.

Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from social science, geography, economics and policy analysis to mathematical modelling, physics, chemistry, toxicology, and microbiology. Both pure and applied research is conducted on some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services and climate change. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 145 staff and PhD-students are working at the department.

The place of work the first year at the Department of Environmental Science in Roskilde, while the second year is at the Department of Geoscience in Aarhus. The Roskilde campus is located north of of Roskilde, and Copenhagen can be reached within 45 minutes by public transport. The beautiful Aarhus University campus is located close to the downtown of Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark with 400 000 inhabitants. It has a lively and charming downtown close to the Aarhus Bay at the Baltic Sea. In Denmark schools, higher education and health care are free. No candidate will be given preferential treatment, and all applicants will be assessed on the basis of their qualifications for the position in question.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range


Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
