BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The GenomeDK high-performance facility at Aarhus University invites applications for two positions as system administrator as per 1 May 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a permanent full-time position.

GenomeDK (https://genome.au.dk/) is a national high-performance computing (HPC) facility focused providing computational resources for researchers, SMEs, and clinicians. We serve 740+ users and 800+ projects, and take part in multiple national, governmental, and regional collaborations.

We currently manage 23 PB of high-performance storage and 15000 cores, as well as two systems for data backup (4.5 PB and 7.5 PB capacity, respectively). We also provide infrastructure for our users to securely manage and analyze their data.

We are looking for two highly engaged, systematic, and service-minded system administrators for the GenomeDK team, which currently consists of two experienced system administrators. The team is highly autonomous and deals with all aspects of GenomeDK operations.

Physically, we are located at the Bioinformatics Research Centre (BiRC), Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark, and are thus very close to many of our largest users. We attend many of the social events at BiRC, most notably the yearly trip to the beautiful Mols Mountains, and the yearly Christmas lunch. Formally, we’re anchored under the Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Health, where you will also be employed.

Your job responsibilities

As system administrator, your primary tasks are maintenance of the high-performance computing facility and providing support to users of the facility. You will contribute to the continued success of GenomeDK through continuously improving the services we provide for the benefit of our users. In your daily work, you have a close interaction with competent colleagues in a relaxed, thoughtful, and supportive environment.

We work with a range of technologies, most importantly Linux (RHEL-derivative), Slurm, BeeGFS, ZFS, Ansible, Monit, and MariaDB. Our internal tools and services are written in Python, Bash, Rust, and C.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • carrying out day-to-day tasks to ensure smooth operation of our systems,
  • configuring and managing services via configuration management tools,
  • planning and carrying out software updates,
  • planning, purchasing, deploying, and decommissioning hardware,
  • continuously monitoring system health and responding to system failures,
  • responding to support tickets from our users.

Due to the highly sensitive data that we are hosting we maintain an ISO 27001-certification as well as yearly ISAE 3000 declarations. Therefore, it is import that you understand and acknowledge the importance of continuously working with information security.

Your competences

You have a background within computer science, computer engineering, distributed systems, networking, or high-performance computing.

To apply for this position, you must possess most (but not necessarily all) of the below skills:
  • experience managing multi-user, multi-host UNIX/Linux-based systems,
  • familiarity with distributed/parallel filesystems, preferably BeeGFS,
  • familiarity with Linux networking (the OSI stack, iptables/nftables, etc.),
  • skilled in Bash (or similar) and at least one of the other above-mentioned programming languages,
  • friendly and helpful, as we have a strong focus on good support for our users,
  • strong collaborative skills,
  • strong analytical/problem solving/debugging skills,
  • proficient in written and spoken English on a professional level.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are friendly and helpful, and able to contribute to a good work environment. You like solving hard infrastructure problems with simple, maintainable solutions.

Because of the size and structure of the technical team and our organization, it’s easy to take on different tasks and roles, if you wish so, and you will be supported by an excellent management team that plays to your strengths and wishes for personal growth.

As we provide services to Aarhus University Hospital for their clinical data analyses, you will take part in our flexible weekend duty rotation which involves two daily checks for urgent problems every 3-4 weeks. The weekend duty is compensated on top of the negotiated salary.
