The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, invites applications for a tenure track assistant or associate professor position in Building Energy Systems, i.e., candidate having expertise in areas such as modelling of occupancy behaviour, model predictive control of building energy systems in operations at both building and urban levels, or relevant topics.

This is a full-time position expected to be started on 1 October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
 

Job description

As a tenure track assistant or associate professor of building energy systems, you will contribute to the research and teaching environment of the department and to overall research strategy of the faculty. You will teach and supervise students at Bachelor, Master and PhD level, and you will contribute to the development of the department through individual and collaborative research of high international quality. You will work closely together with both Danish and international colleagues.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals
  • Obtaining external research funding
  • Research-based teaching and development of new teaching activities
  • Academic leadership through skilled research management
  • Extensive involvement in national and international collaboration within your field of research
The position is for a candidate holding a PhD in digital modelling for management of building energy systems. You are furthermore expected to have BSc and MSc degrees with a substantial academic content related to building science disciplines, e.g., civil, architectural, or mechanical engineering. Degrees in computer science with specialisation in building energy systems is also qualifying. Experience from the industry is desired but not required. It is essential that your current knowledge, skills, and competencies can be applied to research and teaching in digitalisation of various aspects of building operation such as:
  • Modelling of occupancy and behaviour for performance prediction purposes in the design phase
  • Model predictive control of building energy systems in the operation phase
  • Real-time fault detection and predictive maintenance of building energy systems
  • Control of IoT devices in real buildings and data analysis
  • Expert programming skills in e.g. MATLAB and Python


Who we are

Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering was established on January 1, 2021 in connection with Aarhus University’s reorganization of the engineering area. The department employs around 100 people and is responsible for research and education within the department’s scientific areas. We educate both Bachelors and Masters of Science in Engineering and around 950 students are enrolled in our degree programs. Furthermore, we also offer an advanced PhD program. Our PhD students have high academic potential and deliver high-quality results for both the private and the public sectors.

Through research and development, we forge sustainable technological solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing industry and society. We continuously contribute to sustainable development and to create green solutions to challenges within construction, building energy systems, indoor climate, geo-technics, environmental and climate adaptation and many other areas.

Our research is both basic and applied, and we develop current knowledge into workable solutions in the business community. We collaborate with a wide range of public and private enterprises, and many of the department's research and development activities are based on the innovation needs of the business community. Through collaboration, we ensure that the knowledge and technology generated in the university's technical research environments are clearly anchored in reality and benefit the surrounding society. Based on our research on building materials, architectural design and technology, we also offer research-based public sector services and consultancy on technology to public agencies and ministries.

Technical Sciences Tenure Track

Aarhus University offers talented scientists from around the world attractive career perspectives via the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme. Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship.

The aim of the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

  • to promote the early development of independent research success early in the career of scientists
  • to create transparency in the academic career path
As part of the tenure track position, the candidate is offered:

  • capability development, including postgraduate teacher training

  • support to develop scientific networks and to secure interdisciplinary research at the highest level
As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure


Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range


Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
