The Department of Biology, Aarhus University invites applications for a 2-year postdoc position on: Macroecological studies of ecosystem functioning under rising biosphere novelty.

This postdoc project is part of the newly established Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Overall ECONOVO aims to provide fresh perspectives on the future of the biosphere. Novel ecosystems (NEs) have species compositions or abiotic conditions without historical precedent, e.g., intercontinental species invasions and extraordinary warming. NEs are spreading fast and are expected to be globally dominant by the late 21st century. Key drivers include climate change, globalization, and the extirpation of large-sized organisms, resulting in ecosystems that deviate from anything seen for millions of years. The spread of NEs is likely to profoundly impact biosphere functioning, but our understanding of how remains limited.

The position is for 2 years and is available from June 1, 2024 or soon after.


Job description


This postdoc project will assess the capacity of novel ecosystems to mitigate climate change (carbon pools and accumulation) and maintain ecosystem functioning (resilience) under ongoing global change. We will test if climate mitigation capacity and resilience are modulated by plant species richness in novel ecosystems, as has long been hypothesized for native plant communities. Additionally, we will explore if other aspects of ecological complexity, specifically megafauna-linked trophic complexity and geodiversity, further modulate these factors. The position will employ macroecological analyses using data from satellite remote sensing and existing data on plant and faunal communities to study these interactions and identify gradients of ecosystem novelty.  The position may also employ meta-analyses and field-based work in ECONOVO’s study areas in Europe and South Africa. The postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. Furthermore, active participation in the project’s public outreach and teaching, along with collaboration with other team members, including students, is essential. This collaboration involves sharing skills and contributing to problem-solving within the postdoc’s area of expertise.


Your profile


Applicants must have a PhD degree in ecology or equivalent or have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment before the application deadline. Expertise with quantitative, spatial ecological modelling as well as experience with remote sensing data is expected, in combination with solid general skills in ecology. Experience with vegetation ecology, plant functional traits, and herbivory is an advantage, but not a requirement. The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills, proven abilities to publish at a high international level, and have good command of English. International applicants who do not have English as their first language must demonstrate excellent English language writing skills and fluency.

Supervisor and collaborators:


Professor Jens-Christian Svenning will be the main supervisor, with assistant professors Elizabeth Le Roux and Robert Buitenwerf as co-supervisors – all key personnel at ECONOVO. The postdoc will join the ECONOVO team within the Section for Ecoinformatics & Biodiversity (ECOINF) at the Department of Biology at Aarhus University. Key international associates to ECONOVO will also be involved. Together ECONOVO and ECOINF constitute an ambitious, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and highly international research community. Postdocs and PhD students are encouraged to collaborate within the group, across departments, and with other universities.

This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
