Are you interested in how bacteria defend themselves against viral predators and how this potentially can be used to fight deadly infections? Then the Department of Molecular of Molecular Biology and Genetics invites you to apply for a 4-year position as assistant professor in molecular microbiology.
 

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 4–year position from 1 April 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
 

Job description

The position seeks to strengthen a research direction in the laboratory of Professor Ditlev Egeskov Brodersen aiming at discovering new microbial defence systems, and in particular understanding the role of bacterial toxin-antitoxin systems in phage defence. The candidate will,

  • Establish new experimental methods and bacterial model organisms in the lab.
  • Be involved in managing lab facilities and data as well as co-supervise BSc, MSc, and PhD students.
  • Participate in Aarhus University’s pedagogical program.
  • Be involved in the establishment of international collaborative research programs including external members of the academic community.
  • Assist in creating a collaborative and productive working environment for the research team.



Your profile


The candidate must have
  • A Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or similar.
  • A proven track record in the area of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, ideally with experience in bacterial toxin-antitoxin systems, handling of various bacterial strains, genetic manipulation, and protein purification.
  • The candidate should have the potential or demonstrated ability to lead research projects and research teams, and experience with project management is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English is required.
  • Candidates with teaching experience either at basic courses or supervision at the bachelor and/or master level are preferred.
  • A positive attitude, flexibility, and high organization skills is important.
 

Who we are

Situated in a newly renovated laboratory complex within the central campus of Aarhus University, The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics comprises a vibrant research and education environment. The department currently has 75 full time scientific staff, 95 PhD students and a yearly uptake of around 120 students housed in the same building ensuring a lively setting.
The department has access to state-of-the-art core facilities, including FACS, Bioimaging, CryoEM and Biophysics cores.

Deadline


Applications must be received no later than 21 February 2024.
 


Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range


Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
