Title:
Dairy cows and pasture management to improve sustainability of dairy farming

Research area and project description:
We are seeking a dedicated PhD student for a 3-year position focusing on grazing and strategies to improve milk production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The impact of milk production on climate and environment is significant, with high greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient runoff. Studies suggest that grazing is a potent mitigation tool for reducing enteric methane emissions from dairy cows. Studies on grazing systems, grazing management, and grazing in combination with other methane mitigating strategies are needed to enable quantification of the carbon footprint of milk production.

The PhD student will study the impact of grazing on dairy cows’ methane emission, conduct production trials with lactating dairy cows to investigate effects of grazing management and mitigating strategies on milk production and greenhouse gas emissions, and also perform experiments with cannulated cows to elucidate the mechanism of changed enteric methane emissions.

The project offers:

  • A unique opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable agriculture and climate-friendly milk production.
  • A stimulating academic environment with access to state-of-the-art research facilities.
  • Collaboration with a range of university partners.
  • Collaborative projects that foster innovative thinking and practical implementation.
