PhD opportunity in regenerative building design at Aarhus University

dato

Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Civil and Architectural Engineering programme. The position is available from 01 September 2026 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'how to apply'.

Title:
Building design methods for regeneration

Research area and project description:
The objective of this Ph.D. project is to define a paradigm for design of buildings where a regenerative environmental impact is a boundary condition. The paradigm is operationalized and integrated into early-stage architectural and engineering workflows through computational design methods, simulation environments and parametric modelling approaches. The methodological approach will be a combination of co-creation techniques where the Ph.D. student actively engages with the building industry to develop practical and useful computational design methods, environmental assessment workflows and design principles that enable regenerative environmental performance to inform early-stage architectural and engineering decisions.

The background for the project is that the planetary boundaries are overstepped due to excessive environmental load from human activities which means that humanity has entered a zone of risk of deleterious or even catastrophic environmental change at continental to global scales. The main driver for this is the built environment that e.g. accounts for approx. 43% of all energy-related CO2-emissions. There is therefore an acute need to reduce the environmental load from the built environment to a level that enables the regenerative properties of the planetary ecosystems to reestablish the safe operating space below the planetary boundaries.

Project description: For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.
