BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet
Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Quantitative Genetics and Genomics programme. The position is available from 1 April 2024 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'how to apply'.
Title:
Re-advertisement: Integrating Complex Multi-Layer Data to Accurately Predict Breeding Values for Methane Emission in Cows
Research area and project description:
Denmark is at the forefront in green research, technology development and innovation to increase productivity and resource efficiency, while reducing negative environmental impacts in dairy farming. This PhD project is a part of a larger project, which aims at developing a strategy where high milk production can be maintained whilst reducing enteric methane production using genetics and breeding.
Your role is to develop prediction models capable of efficiently integrating complex multi-layer data, including the host genome, rumen microbiome, gene expression (mRNA levels), and metabolome. These models will enable us to accurately predict breeding values for methane emission in cows, and thereby to accurately select less methane emitting cows for breeding.
You will:
- Identify the list of host genes, rumen microbiota and rumen compounds that responds to feed additive.
- Improve the understanding of interactions between the individual host (cow) genome and rumen microbiome, and identify rumen microbes, which have high heritability.
- Study genetic properties of rumen metabolites and associate metabolites’ profile with microbiome.
- Develop efficient multi-omics models to predict breeding values for methane emission, combining eQTL, genotypes, metabolome and rumen microbiome data.
Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants to the PhD position must:
1. Hold a Master's degree in a relevant quantitative field (Quantitative genetics, Statistical genetics, Applied statistics, Computational biology, or another related field).
2. Have keen interest in quantitative modelling of biological processes
3. Have an interest in sustainable agriculture and environment
4. Have sufficient experience in at least one of the scientific programming languages (e.g. Julia, R, Python)
5. Be fluent in English (written and spoken)
6. Advanced writing and presentation skills, and good communication skills
7. Ability to work independently
8. Additional experience in one or more of the following subjects is highly desirable – 1) network modeling, 2) Bayesian data analysis, 3) genomic prediction and GWAS
