The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of pancreatic cancer (PDAC) and iron metabolism as per 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter (starting date is negotiable). The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 3 years.

About the research project

Our lab is focused on understanding the rewired metabolism of pancreatic cancer (PDAC) cells and how it contributes to tumor growth and drug resistance. We are interested in defining novel metabolic dependencies in PDAC cells and the tumor microenvironment that we can target alone or in drug combinations to overcome resistance (PMID: 30470748, PMID: 32234489). Using in vitro and in vivo PDAC models, we recently described a vulnerability in ferritinophagy, a process that mediates iron release in the lysosome (PMID: 35771492). Cancer cells are highly reliant on iron and blocking iron turnover decreased PDAC growth by impairing mitochondrial respiration. Using cell culture-based studies, quantitative proteomics and mouse models, this project will explore the contribution of iron metabolism to drug resistance to design efficient drug combinations targeting PDAC cells or the tumor microenvironment.

Your job responsibilities

As Postdoc in pancreatic cancer and iron metabolism, your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will be part of a rich intellectual and collaborative environment and have access to state-of-the-art facilities within the Department. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project to receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Cell culture, including co-culture techniques.
  • Analysis of gene and protein expression in cell and tissue lysates.
  • Animal experimentation, including tumor cell injection, dosing and tissue harvests.
  • Immunohistochemistry.
  • Assisting in quantitative proteomics sample preparation.
  • Contributing to the preparation of manuscripts, and ideally fellowship applications.
  • Help in the supervision of a junior scientist in the lab.
  • Present our work at meetings, conferences, or workshops.

You will report to Assistant Professor Naiara Santana Codina and the Head of Department for Biomedicine.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at PhD level preferably within one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, biochemistry, cancer biology. Experience with animal work (rodent models), proteomics sample preparation and data analysis is desirable.
As a person you are highly motivated, inclusive, independent yet willing to collaborate with other team members and eager to develop a novel research program. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English and possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
